The early 1960’s, for the Western world, a time of peace. A deserted house in the French coutryside: two young Americans, Mopsy and Peter, wander in. Mopsy dotes on dangerous games: driving people she considers “worthless” to suicide. She’s picked up an obedient helper: Peter, a penniless and disturbed eighteen year old. Today’s target is Liliane, the middle-aged owner of the house. She’s wealthy, effusively mannered and self-interested to the point of madness. Mopsy enjoys the idea of destroying Liliane by having Peter seduce her. In truth, Liliane has pieced together a façade which permits her to avoid the painful memories of her youth. She and her ordinary middle-class family were deported by the Nazis to a concentration camp. She tries to transfer her long buried past onto Peter. “Tug of War” was presented at the Roundabout Theatre, New York. Lilaine’s monologue, in French, was included in “La Plus Grande Grande Pièce du monde” at the Théâtre du Rond-Point, Paris, France. This was a collage of works protesting fascist extremism.
